St. Louis says goodbye, thank you to Stan Musial

St. Louis said goodbye, and thank you, to Stan Musial on Saturday with a mixture of tears, smiles and laughter emerging as the final tribute to the greatest Cardinal who ever lived.

Musial, who died a week ago at the age of 92, was eulogized by Cardinal chairman Bill DeWitt Jr., broadcaster Bob Costas, Andrew Edmonds, one of Musial’s 11 grandchildren, and by Dr. Martin Schwarze, Musial’s son-in-law, during the two-hour mass at the St. Louis Cathedral Basilica

Halak earns second shutout in 3-0 win over Nashville

Jaroslav Halak earned his second shutout of the young season for the Blues Thursday night — and he did not have to work very hard to get it. The St. Louis defense limited Nashville to only 13 shots on goal and Patrik Berglund scored on a penalty shot and assisted on a power-play goal by T.J. Oshie to lead the Blues to a 3-0 victory over the Predators.

Musial's death prompts personal memories of why he was The Man

One of my greatest regrets as a baseball writer, and as a life-long fan of the game, is that I never got to see Stan Musial play. I missed him by one year.

The first game I ever saw at the first Busch Stadium was in 1964 when I was eight years old, making the trip from my home in Springfield, Mo., with my mom and older brother. Musial had retired the year before.

Tarasenko scores two goals as Blues win opener


The lockout forced Vladimir Tarasenko to delay his NHL debut with the St. Louis Blues, but it turned out to be worth the wait.

The 20-year-old Tarasenko, who had been playing in his native Russia during the lockout, scored the first two goals of his NHL career Saturday night — on his first two shots — to lead the Blues to a 6-0 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.

- Randal Grichuk homered for the fourth consecutive game, one of three homers by the Cardinals, who defeated the Rockies 8-2 Monday night in their first game at Busch Stadium in 15 days.

- Jose Martinez hit a pinch-hit homer and Tommy Pham also homered ,tying for the team lead with 14, as the Cardinals pulled within four games of first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central. 

- Lance Lynn, the subject of numerous trade rumors, is scheduled to start tonight for the Cardinals against Jon Gray of the Rockies.
