Game Report: Cardinals 11, Diamondbacks 4

Adam Wainwright won his first game of the season Wednesday night, in part by helping himself with a bases-loaded triple during a five-run sixth inning that sent the Cardinals past the Diamondbacks in Phoenix.

Wainwright had gone 0-3 in his first four starts of the season but had his best start of the season, even though he still failed to get through the sixth inning.

Rookie shortstop Aledmys Diaz had another big night with a home run as he went 2-for-4, reaching the number of plate appearances he needs to qualify for the NL batting race. His average of .468 is now officially the top mark in the NL.

Here is how the game broke down:

At the plate:
Stephen Piscotty had four hits for the second time in his career to lead the Cardinals’ 14-hit attack, driving in two runs … They trailed 3-2 going into the sixth after Diaz’s fourth homer of the year in the fifth, then sent nine men to the plate as they broke the game open. Diaz drew a walk to load the bases before Wainwright sent a ball into the left-field corner for his first hit of the year … Matt Carpenter’s single in the sixth drove in two more runs and Matt Holliday also finished with two RBI … The Cardinals have scored seven runs or more in each of the past five games.

On the mound:
Wainwright allowed just three runs through the first five innings, giving up a two-run homer to Brandon Drury in the second and a solo shot to Paul Goldschmidt in the third. He left after giving up an RBI single to David Peralta in the sixth. He struck out five and walked only one, the nest to last batter he faced In the game …Seung Hwan Oh, Jonathan Broxton and Matt Bowman combined to pitch the final 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Key stat:
Wainwright had been just 2-for-20 in his career with the bases loaded, although both hits were doubles, once in 2008 and the last coming on July 4, 2010 … It was the first triple by a Cardinals’ pitcher since Jaime Garcia hit one in 2012, and was the first triple with the bases loaded by a Cardinals pitcher since Jason Marquis hit one on April 12, 2005 … Wainwright’s other triple came on Oct. 2, 2009.

Of note:
After hitting third for the first time in his career on Tuesday night, Carpenter was back in the leadoff spot but played first base, only the third time he had started at the position since 2012 … Ruben Tejada started at third and made a throwing error, the Cardinals’ 21st of the season, the most in the major leagues … After battling flu-like symptoms for the past several days, Kolten Wong pinch-hit in the ninth inning and delivered a single … The Cardinals are now 14-2 against the Diamondbacks since the start of the 2014 season.

Looking ahead:
The Cardinals and Diamondbacks will close out the four-game series on Thursday night. Michael Wacha will get the start against Robby De La Rosa. The Cardinals will fly home after the game, likely getting back to St. Louis about 5 a.m., before beginning a series Friday night against the Washington Nationals at Busch Stadium.
