Game Report: Cardinals 5 Cubs 3

By Rob Rains

The Cardinals waited out a seventh inning rain delay of 3 hours, 21 minutes and then held off the Cubs to earn the victory on Wednesday at Busch Stadium and salvage the final game of the three-game series.

Carlos Martinez allowed just three hits and one run in seven innings to raise his record to 3-0. Trevor Rosenthal struck out the side in the ninth to earn his 100th career save.

Here is how the game broke down:

At the plate:
Matt Holliday staked Martinez to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when he followed a double by Stephen Piscotty with his third homer of the year … The Cardinals increased the lead to 4-0 in the second when Yadier Molina led off with a double, went to third on a single by Kolten Wong and scored on a wild pitch before Martinez delivered the second run with a single … After the delay, they added an insurance run in the eighth on Molina’s second hit of the game … Molina was 5-for-10 with two RBIs in the series and now has a .311 average and 88 RBIs in 158 career games against the Cubs, his highest totals against any team he has faced in more than 100 games … After going 0-for-10, Piscotty was 2-for-4 but Jeremy Hazelbaker was retired in his only at-bat as a pinch-hitter and is now hitless in his last 16 at-bats.

On the mound: Martinez struck out five and walked one, with the only Cubs’ run coming on a homer by Anthony Rizzo. He is 3-0 lifetime against the Cubs in 15 games, including five starts … Seung Hwan Oh allowed the first two runs of his career in the eighth after pitching 7 2/3 scoreless innings in his first seven appearances … In the ninth, Rosenthal struck out the side for the first time this season and seventh time in his career in earning his fourth save.

Key stat: The Cardinals completed the nine-game homestand without an RBI out of the cleanup spot. The team started four players in that spot during the nine games – Matt Adams, Brandon Moss, Grichuk and Piscotty – and they combined to go 5-for-34, a .147 average, with three runs scored. For the season, the Cardinals have five RBI in 15 games out of the fourth spot in the order and their combined batting average of .172 is the lowest in the National League.

Of note: Holliday’s homer was the third of his career off Kyle Hendricks. He has hit four career homers off four pitchers, Yovani Gallardo, Bronson Arroyo, Travis Wood and Brad Penny … Grichuk took a home run away from Rizzo in the first inning, jumping to make the catch just as the ball was almost over the left-center wall … The Cubs will be back in St. Louis for three games beginning May 23. The Cardinals do not play in Chicago until June 20 … The actual time of game was 41 minutes shorter than the rain delay, which was longer than 12 of their 15 games so far this season.

Looking ahead: The Cardinals head to San Diego after Thursday’s day off to open a three-game series on Friday night. Adam Wainwright (0-2, 8.27 ERA) will start the opener against Andrew Cashner (0-1, 5.40 ERA). After the three games in San Diego the Cardinals will play four in Arizona before returning home on April 29 to play Washington.
