Game Report: Blues 6, Senators 0

By Nicholas Hand

A night after Carter Hutton’s third shutout of the season, Blues head coach Mike Yeo decided to start Jake Allen between the pipes on Tuesday night in Ottawa.

The move paid off with Allen posting the Blues’ second-consecutive shutout, recording 30 saves, and the team broke out on offense to win consecutive games for only the second time since Dec. 1.

Vladimir Tarasenko had two goals to lead the Blues, who also got goals from Magnus Paajarvi, Alexander Steen, Patrik Berglund, and Ivan Barbashev, who scored the first goal of his NHL career.

St. Louis built off Monday night’s win with a solid first period performance that saw the Blues outshoot the Senators 13-5 in a scoreless first period.

The Blues took a 1-0 lead 1:51 into the second period on Paajarvi’s second goal of the season. Paajarvi, recalled from Chicago after Robby Fabbri’s season-ending injury, accepted a Kevin Shattenkirk pass in the neutral zone and used his speed to get around Ottawa’s defense before cutting to the middle of the ice and lifting the puck over the short side shoulder of goaltender Andrew Hammond.

The Blues took a 2-0 lead on Tarasenko’s 24th goal of the season on a beautiful pass from Paul Stastny just seconds after a Marc Methot hooking minor expired.

Stastny fed Tarasenko with a pass from the goal line after faking a move to the net, creating a half open net for Tarasenko to bury the puck.

The Blues exploded for four goals in the third period starting just 1:46 into the period on a power play goal by Berglund.

Berglund’s 13th of the season started with a zone entry from David Perron who fed the puck to a streaking Kenny Agostino who quickly backhanded a shot on Hammond creating a rebound that Berglund buried.

Ottawa challenged the goal for offsides but the replay proved inconclusive.
Steen gave St. Louis a commanding 4-0 lead on his own rebound following the second terrific assist by Stastny on the night at 10:43.

Tarasenko’s second goal of the game gave the Blues a 5-0 lead with 6:11 remaining in regulation. Steen and Parayko assisted on Tarasenko’s team-leading 25th goal of the season.

The sixth Blues goal came from Barbashev at 15:01 for the 6-0 final.

Of Note:
The Blues won back-to-back road games for just the second time this season… The Blues top line of Steen-Stastny-Tarasenko combined for six points on Tuesday night. Perron also registered two assists as four Blues had multi-point games… Paajarvi replaced Dmitrij Jaskin in the lineup who was a healthy scratch along with Carl Gunnarsson and Nail Yakupov … The shutout was the second of the season for Allen and the 13th of his career.

Looking Ahead:
The Blues continue the five-game road trip on Thursday night in Toronto against the Maple Leafs.
