Game Report: Predators 6, Blues 3

By Nicholas Hand

Six unanswered goals by the Predators erased a 3-0 Blues lead as the Blues suffered one of their worst road defeats of the season on Tuesday night in Nashville.

Mike Fisher scored twice for the Predators and James Neal, Filip Forsberg, Ryan Johansen and Mike Ribeiro also chipped in goals. Kevin Shattenkirk, Ryan Reaves and Brad Hunt scored for the Blues
The Blues led 3-2 entering the third period before the Predators reeled off four goals, dropping the Blues to 1-3 on their four-game road trip.

Jake Allen took the loss surrendering five goals on 33 Nashville shots before he was chased from the net in the third period. Pekka Rinne earned the win, making 23 saves and rebounding from a rough first period.

The Blues jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening period with a goal from Shattenkirk midway through the period and a Reaves goal late in the period.

A seeing-eye shot from the point by Shattenkirk deflected off of Nashville defenseman Roman Josi’s pants and past Rinne to start the scoring at 10:12.

A terrific play from Kyle Brodziak from behind the net set up Reaves’ goal at 16:41. Brodziak sent a backhanded pass to Reaves in the slot who fired a shot over the shoulder of Rinne and underneath the crossbar.

The Predators had many quality chances in the first period with nine shots but could not solve Allen through 20 minutes.

The Blues increased the lead to 3-0 just 1:49 into the second period on the power play with Hunt’s first goal of the season and as a Blue.

Hunt fired a one-timer that escaped Rinne as he crossed the crease following a cross-ice pass from Vladimir Tarasenko. Shattenkirk also assisted on the goal.

But the Predators came storming back after the Blues third goal. Neal put Nashville on the board right off a Johansen faceoff win in which Neal blistered the puck past Allen at 4:07.

The deficit was trimmed to one goal just over two minutes later when Forsberg was allowed to walk-in uncontested and then beat Allen on a five-hole shot.

The third period was all Nashville as Johansen scored at 3:04 to even the score at three.
Fisher gave the Predators their first lead of the evening at 9:02 when poor defense by the Blues and a Patrik Berglund broken stick created a two-on-one with Colin Wilson who sent a pass that Fisher buried with an open net.

Ribeiro made it 5-3 after a Shattenkirk turnover gave the puck to Craig Smith who fired a shot from a low angle that Allen was unable to control with a rebound directly to Ribeiro at 10:31.

The goal chased Allen from the game as Carter Hutton entered the game.

Fisher extended the lead with an empty net goal for the 6-3 final.

Of Note: Hunt now has three points (1 goal, 2 assists) in his first three games with the Blues… Tarasenko extended his point streak to four games with two assists… After going scoreless in the first 25 games of the season, Reaves now has two goals in the last three games… Nail Yakupov played 12:37 after being a healthy scratch for a prolonged stretch… Defenseman Carl Gunnarsson remains sidelined with a lower-body injury but is skating with the team and could return on Thursday… Dmitrij Jaskin and Ty Rattie were healthy scratches.
