- Lance Lynn gave up two home runs to Kendrys Morales which accounted for all of the runs in the game as the Cardinals were shut out 5-0 for the second consecutive game Friday night in Kansas City. Morales hit a three-run homer off Lynn in the first inning and added a two-run shot in the third.
- The Cardinals' scoreless streak is now 22 consecutive innings. They were 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position Friday night and left 13 runners on base. Matt Holliday was 0-of-4 but was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning, extending his streak of reaching base to all 39 games he has played this season.
- John Lackey will get the start in the second game of the series tonight while Edinson Volquez is scheduled to start for the Royals, who now have the best winning percentage in the majors with a 27-14 record, a half game better than the Cardinals' 27-15 record.
