- Jaime Garcia made a solid return to the rotation but was out-dueled by Jacob deGrom, who allowed only one hit in eight innings, as the Mets beat the Cardinals 5-0 on Thursday in New York. Garcia pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Lucas Duda broke the game open with a three-run homer, his second of the game, off Randy Choate in the eighth inning.
- deGrom allowed a one-out single to Matt Carpenter in the first inning but then retired the next 23 batters in a row through the eighth inning, striking out 11 Kolten Wong got the Cardinals' second hit of the game with two outs in the ninth.
- The Cardinals now head to Kansas City for a three-game weekend series. Lance Lynn will start the opener tonight against Chris Young.
