- The Cardinals could not push the tying run across the plate in the ninth inning and saw their eight-game winning streak end with a 6-5 loss to the Cubs Wednesday night at Busch Stadium. Peter Bourjos led off the ninth with a single and got to third with one out, but after Matt Holliday was intentionally walked, Mark Reynolds struck out and Jhonny Peralta grounded into a game-ending force out.
- The 11-game homestand and four-game series against the Cubs will conclude with a 12:45 p.m. game today. John Lackey will pitch against Jake Arrieta.
- Before Wednesday night's game, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said reliever Jordan Walden will be out between six and 10 weeks because of a torn muscle in his right shoulder. The injury will not require surgery. Mozeliak also said Jaime Garcia will begin a rehab assignment on Sunday in Memphis.
