LEADOFF QUICK HITTER NEWS

FriDay, July 31, 2015

-  With the non-waiver trading deadline just hours away, the Cardinals made another deal today, acquiring right-handed reliever Jonathan Broxton from the Brewers along with cash in exchange for minor-league outfielder Malik Collymore, who was playing at rookie-level Johnson City.

- Greg Garcia, who started the day in Memphis, drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning to cap a three-run rally which gave the Cardinals a wild 9-8 win over the Rockies Thursday night at Busch Stadium.

- Matt Carpenter – moved back into the leadoff spot – ignited the rally with a ground-rule double, his fourth hit on a night that included his first two-homer game – before the Cardinals tied it on a two-run single by Jhonny Peralta. Carpenter had four hits, scored four runs and drove in four, the first Cardinal to do that since Albert Pujols on July 20, 2004.

- The Cardinals acquired first-baseman/outfielder Brandon Moss from the Indians on Thursday in exchange for minor-league pitching prospect Rob Kaminsky. Moss entered the game as pinch-hitter in the sixth inning and was 0-of-2.

- Garcia was recalled to replace Matt Holliday on the roster after Holliday went back on the disabled list after re-injuring his right quad on Wednesday night. An MRI revealed the injury was a grade 2 strain and the Cardinals said they were optimistic he might be able to be back before the end of the season.

- Michael Wacha will pitch the second game of the series tonight while Kyle Kendrick is scheduled to start for the Rockies.
