LEADOFF QUICK HITTER NEWS

MonDay, July 5, 2015

 - Matt Holliday and Jhonny Peralta were named Sunday as starters for the NL team in the All-Star game, the first time either has been elected by the fans to start the game. Holliday has been on the DL since June 9 but he said today he expects to be activated this week before the Cardinals' series in Pittsburgh and is planning on playing in the July 14 game in Cincinnati.

- The pitching staffs and reserves for the All-Star rosters will be announced tonight. Three Cardinals finished second in the fan voting, second baseman Kolten Wong, third baseman Matt Carpenter and catcher Yadier Molina.

- The combination of Lance Lynn – both pitching and on offense - and Tommy Pham sent the Cardinals to a 3-1 victory over the Padres Sunday at Busch Stadium. Pham hit his first career homer, a two-run shot, and also had an RBI double, each time scoring Lynn, in his third career start. Lynn allowed only three hits and one unearned run in seven innings.

- Before the game the Cardinals placed pitcher Jaime Garcia on the disabled list because of a strained groin. The team had hoped he would be able to pitch Tuesday in Chicago, but instead the starters for the day-night doubleheader will be Tim Cooney and Tyler Lyons.

- Former teammates and good friends John Lackey and Jon Lester will pitch against each other for the first time in their careers tonight in the opener of the Cardinals' four-game series against the Cubs. The Cardinals will then play four games in Pittsburgh before the All-Star break.
