- John Gant hit his first career home run - his first hit in the major leagues - to spark a 6-4 win by the Cardinals Tuesday night over the Nationals at Busch Stadium. Gant had been hitless in 30 at-bats, 20 this season, before his two-run blast in the second innin.g On the mound he allowed only one run in 5 1/3 innings.

- Kolten Wong also homered and drove in three runs as the Cardinals won their seventh game in a row and improved to a season-best 10 games over .500. They now trail the Cubs by four games in the NL Central and are just one game behind the Phillies for the second wild-card spot.

- It was a month ago Tuesday that the Cardinals named Mike Shildt the interim manager, and the team is now 18-9 since that change.

- Austin Gomber will get the start in tonight's game against the Nationals.
