Game Report: Cardinals 8, Pirates 4

A night after a lot of their players were frustrated because of missed opportunities, the Cardinals made certain that didn’t happen again on Saturday night.

Jedd Gyorko had two doubles which drove in three runs and Jose Martinez also had a pair of doubles and scored twice to lead the Cardinals past the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

On Friday night, the Cardinals lost despite pounding out 15 hits and scoring six times because of 16 stranded baserunners and losing two runners at the plate. On Saturday night they collected 14 hits, including seven doubles.

Matt Carpenter capped the big night with his 28th home run of the season in the ninth inning. That tied his career high and also moved him into a tie with Colorado’s Nolan Arenado for the most homers this season in the National League.

Here is how the game broke down:

At the plate: The Cardinals got production throughout the lineup as Yadier Molina had three hits and an RBI, Carpenter reached base four times on the homer, a double and two walks, one intentional, and scored three runs … Kolten Wong had three hits and an RBI as he returned from the disabled list and Harrison Bader added two hits and an RBI … Carpenter has now reached base in his last 23 games … Martinez was a late substitute for Tyler O’Neill, who had to be scratched because of groin discomfort.

On the mound: The Pirates scored all of their runs off starter Austin Gomber. David Freese homered in the second before Gomber allowed five hits, leading to three runs, in the fourth … Dakota Hudson relieved and retired all nine hitters he faced over the next three innings to earn his second victory … Mike Mayers pitched around a single and a walk in the eighth before Bud Norris pitched the ninth, retiring all three hitters he faced, even though it was not a save situation

Key stat: Of Carpenter’s 28 homers, 24 have come with nobody on base. He has hit two three-run homers and two two-run homers. As a team, the Cardinals have hit 137 homers this season, 90 of which came with nobody on base.

Worth noting: Research by the Cardinals media relations department found that the 16 runners left on base on Friday night was the highest total for a nine-inning game by the Cardinals since they also stranded 16 runners on May 24, 1994 against the Phillies … With Dexter Fowler going on the disabled list on Saturday, only five players have now been on the active roster for all 111 of the Cardinals’ games this season – Jordan Hicks, Norris, Carpenter, Marcell Ozuna and Francisco Pena … Dominic Leone pitched a scoreless inning for Memphis on Saturday night in his second rehab game … Also at Memphis Justin Williams, one of the prospects acquired for Tommy Pham, hit his first home run since the trade … Nolan Gorman homered for the third game in a row for Johnson City and now has 11 on the season. He also had four hits on Saturday night, raising his average to .341.

Looking ahead: Jack Flaherty will get the start in the final game of the series on Sunday.
