Game Report: Cardinals 5, Padres 2

Coming into this season, the Cardinals envisioned Marcell Ozuna being the big bat they have been missing in the middle of their lineup. After a slow start, he is starting to become that hitter.

He just doesn’t have as big a bat as Jose Martinez.

Martinez and Ozuna each hit a two-run homer to back a solid start from Jack Flaherty as the Cardinals beat the Padres Monday night at Busch Stadium.

Martinez also had a pair of singles, giving him his 10th game this season with three or more hits, raising his season average to .327. His homer was his 10th of the year and fifth in his last six games, taking over the team lead.

Here is how the game broke down:

At the plate:
Martinez’s homer came in the third inning and Ozuna followed Martinez’s single with his homer in the fifth, his seventh of the season … Jedd Gyorko continued to torment his former team with a homer in the eighth, his ninth in 15 career games against the Padres … The Cardinals improved to 18-4 at home this season when they hit at least one home run … Yadier Molina and Yairo Munoz each added two hits to the Cardinals’ 12-hit attack … Dexter Fowler was 0-of-4, dropping his season average to .173.

On the mound: Flaherty allowed just three hits, all in the second inning and one of which was a solo homer, over 6 1/3 innings. He did not issue a walk until the final batter he faced in the game, which came after he had retired 14 batters in a row. He struck out six in raising his record to 3-2 … John Brebbia relieved Flaherty and walked the first two batters he faced to load the bases before striking out the next two batters to end the seventh … Sam Tuivailala allowed a runner he inherited from Austin Gomber to score in the eighth … Bud Norris hit one batter in the ninth before finishing off his 13th save.

Key stat: In nine games in June, Martinez is now hitting .531 (17-of-32) with five homers and 11 RBIs. In his 10 games this month, Ozuna is now hitting .395 (15-of-38) with four homers and 11 RBIs. The rest of the team combined in June is 52-of-264, a .197 average, with five homers and 16 RBIs.

Worth noting: The Cardinals purchased the contract of pitcher Daniel Poncedeleon from Memphis and optioned first baseman Luke Voit to the Triple A club. The promotion came just 13 months after Poncedeleon was hit in the head by a line drive, forcing him to miss the rest of last season … First-round draft pick Nolan Gorman arrived at Busch Stadium to sign his contract and take batting practice. He will be assigned to Johnson City to begin his pro career … The Cardinals have reportedly agreed to terms with their second draft pick, right=hander Griffin Roberts, but that has not been announced by the team … Greg Holland suffered a blown save for Memphis on Monday, allowing a double, single and a three-run homer in the ninth inning against Reno … The Cardinals began wearing a round number 2 patch on the left sleeve of their jerseys on Monday night, a tribute to Red Schoendienst, who died last week at the age of 95.

Looking ahead: Miles Mikolas will get the start on Tuesday night in the second game of the three-game series.
