Game Report: Cardinals 2, Padres 0

Carlos Martinez had to wait until his 81st start with the Cardinals and 150th as a professional before pitching his first shutout. The second came a lot quicker.

Making his 15th start since that June 10 shutout over the Phillies, Martinez allowed just three hits and struck out 10 in blanking the Padres on Monday in San Diego.

It was the Cardinals’ first shutout in San Diego since Woody Williams pitched a two-hitter on Sept. 5, 2001.

Martinez also became the first Cardinal to throw multiple shutouts in a season since Adam Wainwright had three in 2014.

Here is how the game broke down:

At the plate: The Cardinals scored both of their runs in the fourth inning. Tommy Pham led off with a single and stole second before Paul DeJong walked. A single by Jose Martinez loaded the bases, and a single by Yadier Molina on a ball which eluded Padres’ left fielder Jose Pirela drove in both of the runs … Pham also had an infield single in the fifth and was the only Cardinal with two hits out of the team’s total of seven.

On the mound:
Martinez threw 109 pitches and walked three, all in the last two innings, to go along with his 10 strikeouts. He allowed a single with two outs in the third, a single with two outs in the fourth and a one-out single in the seventh, both of those from Will Myers … The Padres did not have a runner reach second base in the game.

Key stat: Martinez had 11 strikeouts in shutting out the Phillies in June and became the first Cardinals pitcher to have at least two shutouts and strike out at least 10 batters in both games in the same season since Chris Carpenter in 2005.

Worth noting:
After sitting out the last two games, Matt Carpenter started at third base but had to leave the game after striking out in the fifth inning. He has been dealing with a sore shoulder for a while, but the exact nature of the injury is unknown. He has just two hits in 17 at-bats on the current road trip … Pham also hurt his shoulder during the game and was forced to leave early. The injury came during a head-first slide into second base in the fourth … The Cardinals already were playing without Dexter Fowler and Kolten Wong. Fowler missed his second game in a row because of a sore hip while Wong is dealing with a sore back.

Looking ahead:
Michael Wacha will get the start in the second game of the series in Tuesday night’s game, which begins at 9:10 p.m. St. Louis time. Travis Wood is set to start for the Padres.
