Game Report: Cardinals 11, Pirates 7

Just as the Cardinals braced for the results of tests on Trevor Rosenthal’s right elbow, they also might be facing a problem with Adam Wainwright.

Wainwright made his second consecutive start with a decrease in his velocity on Thursday night in Pittsburgh, giving up five runs in just three innings. He threw only one of his 55 pitches at more than 89 miles per hour, and that 90 mile per hour fastball resulted in an RBI single by Josh Bell.

Wainwright did not strike out a batter for the second consecutive start after making 261 consecutive starts since 2007 with at least one strikeout.

After Wainwright departed, the Cardinals rallied from a 5-1 deficit to defeat the Pirates behind three RBIs from Dexter Fowler and home runs from Jedd Gyorko and Tommy Pham.

While Wainwright was struggling on the mound, Rosenthal was back in St. Louis undergoing tests on his right elbow. He was placed on the disabled list after having to come out of the game on Wednesday night in Boston after just eight pitches.

The initial diagnosis of Rosenthal’s injury was right elbow irritation, but an MRI could reveal more significant damage. The Cardinals are expected to provide an updated report on the test results on Friday.

Here is how the game broke down:

At the plate:
The Cardinals trailed 5-4 in the seventh when Fowler’s triple drove in the tying and go-ahead runs and he then scored on a single by Yadier Molina … Fowler also singled in a run in the fifth and walked in two other at-bats, both times coming around to score … Gyorko hit his 16th homer in the second and Pham’s 15th homer ignited a four-run ninth inning, capped by a two-run triple by Randal Grichuk … Kolten Wong had two hits and two RBIs.

On the mound: Wainwright gave up a two-run homer in the first and three runs in the third on four singles and a walk … Luke Weaver, recalled from Memphis to replace Rosenthal, pitched the next two innings before coming out after a 1 hour, 12 minute rain delay … With the Cardinals leading 7-5 in the seventh, Matt Bowman inherited runners on first and second with no outs but got a strikeout and two groundouts to get out of the jam … The Pirates scored their last two runs in the ninth off Seung Hwan Oh.

Key stat:
It was the first time this season the Cardinals won a game in which they allowed seven or more runs. They had been 0-22 when giving up seven or more runs before Thursday night.

Worth noting: The win left the Cardinals 1 ½ games behind the Cubs in the NL Central … Every Cardinals’ starter except Wainwright had at least one hit and all but Wainwright and Carpenter had at least one RBI …The Cardinals turned four double plays in the game.

Looking ahead: Carlos Martinez will get the start in the second game of the series on Friday night. Trevor Williams is scheduled to start for the Pirates.
