Game Report: Phillies 5. Cardinals 1

For the second game in a row, the Cardinals fell into an early hole against the Phillies on Thursday. Unlike in Wednesday night’s game, however, there was no comeback.

The Cardinals lost to the Phillies for the first time in six games this season, ending a six-game roadtrip with a 3-3 record.

Here is how the game broke down:

At the plate: The Cardinals were held to four hits, one of which produced their only run, a homer by Paul DeJong In the eighth, his fourth of the season and third on the roadtrip … The other three hits were all singles, one each by Tommy Pham, Stephen Piscotty and Yadier Molina.

On the mound: Carlos Martinez took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits over six innings … The other two runs scored off Kevin Siegrist, both of which were unearned as was one of the runs off Martinez thanks to three Cardinals errors.

Key stat: On the six game trip to Baltimore and Philadelphia, 28 of the Cardinals’ 39 runs scored off home runs, including 22 of their 28 runs in the final five games.

Worth noting: Dexter Fowler did not play after having to come out of Wednesday night’s game because of tightness in his leg. More should be known about his status on Friday … Randal Grichuk hit his sixth homer Thursday night for Memphis.

Looking ahead: Adam Wainwright will get the start as the Cardinals open a three-game series against the Pirates at Busch Stadium. Wainwright is coming off the shortest start of his career, lasting just 1 2/3 innings against the Orioles.
