Result: Cardinals 3, Astros 2

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Matt Adams was back in left field for the Cardinals’ game Monday night but the team still doesn’t really know if he can play there.

In those three appearances, Adams has yet to have a fly ball hit in his direction.

Adams did show he can still hit against the Astros with his RBI single in the first inning helping produce the Cardinals first run. He also had a bunt single against the shift in four at-bats, raising his spring average to .302. He did, however, strike out in his other two at-bats.

Other news and notes from Monday:

The win was the seventh in their last eight games for the Cardinals and was their 19th of the spring, their most since they also won 19 games in 2009.

Dexter Fowler, who has had a good spring, was 0-for-4 and struck out three times.

At the plate:
Kolten Wong tripled to drive in a run in the second and then scored on a single by Carlos Martinez … Harrison Bader started in right field and had a double … Yadier Molina, Aledmys Diaz and Jose Martinez, who played first base again, also contributed singles to the team’s total of nine hits.

On the mound:
After giving up two runs in the first inning, Martinez allowed just one infield hit over his final four innings of work in his final spring start before Sunday night’s start against the Cubs in the season-opener. He walked two and struck out two. He finished the spring with a 1.38 ERA … Tyler Lyons, who will start the year on the DL, allowed just one hit and a walk in two scoreless innings of relief … The Astros loaded the bases with one out against Jonathan Broxton in the eighth on a hit and two walks before he got a double-play grounder to get out of the inning … Kevin Siegrist pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

In the clubhouse: After leaving his start on Saturday after one inning because of tightness behind his shoulder, Lance Lynn will make his final spring appearance in a minor-league game on Thursday. He had been scheduled to start the exhibition game against the Triple A team in Memphis. The new starter for that game has not been announced … Jhonny Peralta, who also left Saturday’s game early after fouling a ball off his left knee, is expected to play on Tuesday … After the game the Cardinals reassigned outfielder Adolis Garcia and infielder Patrick Wisdom to the minor-league camp and optioned Carson Kelly and Mike Mayers to Memphis.

Up Next: The Cardinals have two games left in Florida. They will head to Port St. Lucie on Tuesday to play the Mets, with Adam Wainwright getting his final start of the spring.
