Game Report: Cardinals 10, Rockies 5

It was just four days ago that the Cardinals were two outs away from falling four games behind the Giants in the battle for the two NL wild-card spots.

Their win on Tuesday night in Colorado moved them into a tie with the Mets and the Giants in the battle for the two spots..

Adam Wainwright extended the Cardinals’ winning streak, which began with the ninth-inning rally Saturday night, to four games. He drove in a career-high four runs with a two-run double and a two-run single.

The Mets lost their second game in a row to the Braves on Tuesday night while the Giants were playing a late game in Los Angeles. A win by the Giants would leave all three teams tied.

Each team has 11 games left in the regular season.

Here is how the game broke down:

At the plate:
Wainwright increased his RBI total for the season to 18, the most by a pitcher since Bob Gibson drove in 19 in 1970. The only pitchers with more RBIs in a season for the Cardinals were Gibson and Dizzy Dean, who had 21 in 1935 … Matt Adams hit his 15th homer of the year in the second and Jedd Gyorko added a two-run homer in the fourth, tying Brandon Moss for the team lead with 27 … Randal Grichuk was 3-for-3 with two doubles, drove in a run and scored four times.

On the mound:
Wainwright allowed four runs on seven hits, three of which were solo homers, in 5 1/3 innings. It was the second time this season Wainwright allowed three homers in a game and he has now given up a career-high 20 homers, 18 of which have come on the road … Michael Wacha made his second relief appearance since coming off the DL and worked two scoreless innings, allowing two hits … Trevor Rosenthal also made his second appearance since returning to the active roster and gave up a run on three hits in the ninth.

Key stat: Now 80-71, the Cardinals will be making their ninth attempt to move to a season-high 10 games over .500 on Wednesday. They have lost all eight previous times they had that opportunity.

Of note:
Wainwright became the first Cardinals pitcher with four RBIs in a game without hitting a home run since Woody Williams on June 5, 2003 against Toronto …. Adams’ homer gave the Cardinals eight players with 15 or more homers for the first time in franchise history … In six career games at Coors Field, Wainwright is 8-for-13 with four doubles and six RBIs … Both Matt Carpenter and Aledmys Diaz had the night off. Carpenter had been 0-for-12 with five strikeouts against Rockies’ starter Jorge De La Rosa.

Looking ahead
: The Cardinals will try to match their longest winning streak of the season and sweep a three-game series in Colorado for the first time since 2004 in the series finale on Wednesday, which begins at 2:10 p.m. St. Louis time. Luke Weaver will pitch against German Marquez, who will be making his first career major-league start.
