Game Report: Cardinals 12, Pirates 6

After going 50 days without a victory, Adam Wainwright did something about it on Monday – with his bat.

Wainwright doubled in a run in the second inning and drove in two more with a fourth-inning single – his first single after nine extra-base hits this season – to lead the Cardinals to the win over the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Wainwright came out of the game after five innings, allowing four runs, but picked up his first victory since July 16. He had gone 0-3 in eight starts since his last win, the longest drought of his career.

Here is how the game broke down:

At the plate: Wainwright got help from an offense that had its best game on this road trip, producing the 12 runs on 14 hits. After getting just three hits with runners in scoring position in the last six games, the team went 7-for-18 in those situations on Monday … Jedd Gyorko hit his team-leading 26th homer and Matt Adams also homered, the 24th consecutive game with at least one homer by the Cardinals … Stephen Piscotty’s two-run double in the second was the team’s first multi-RBI hit that was not a home run since July 27 and then Wainwright did it with his single in the fourth … They had gone 109 innings since scoring three runs in an inning (the first inning on Aug. 23) before doing it twice in three innings on Monday, getting three runs in the second and four in the fourth … Piscotty had to leave the game after he was hit on the left wrist by a pitch in the fifth inning but X-rays were negative … Carson Kelly made his MLB debut and doubled in his first at-bat in the eighth.

On the mound: Wainwright needed 93 pitches to get through five innings. He allowed seven hits, giving up two runs in the second inning and a two-run homer to Andrew McCutchen in the fifth. He struck out five and walked one … Jonathan Broxton worked two scoreless innings and the Pirates added their final two runs in the ninth, including a home run by Adam Frazier, off Miguel Socolovich, in his second inning of work.

Key stat: Gyorko has driven in 51 runs this season, 40 of which have come on his 26 home runs. He has a total of 11 RBI in 298 at-bats this season when he did not hit a home run.

Of note: Wainwright has had three RBIs in a game three times this season, the first pitcher to do that in Cardinals’ history. The last MLB pitcher to do that was Tim Lollar of the Padres in 1984. Combined, the other pitchers in the major leagues had five three-RBI games this season … Wainwright now has 14 RBIs this season, the most by a Cardinals’ pitcher since Rick Wise also had 14 in 1973 … Aledmys Diaz will play shortstop for Double A Springfield on Wednesday and could return to the Cardinals’ lineup next weekend … Matt Holliday will have an MRI on his broken thumb on Wednesday and the Cardinals will then determine the next steps in his rehab from his broken thumb … The Cardinals will promote three more players from Triple A Memphis on Tuesday –pitchers Sam Tuivailala and Mike Mayers and outfielder Jose Martinez. Memphis’ season ended on Monday.

Looking ahead:
Luke Weaver will get the start on Tuesday night in the second game of the series. Ryan Vogelsong will start for the Pirates. Mike Leake will come off the DL to start on Wednesday night, with Alex Reyes moving back to the bullpen.
