High: Shelby Miller struck out the first three batters he faced in his first outing of the spring, but did give up a solo homer to Ian Desmond in his second inning, the only hit he allowed.

Low: Adam Wainwright was knocked around by the Nationals, giving up eight hits and five runs, four earned, in his three innings of work. He allowed two home runs, and struck out only one of the 16 hitters he faced.

On the field: Oscar Taveras started in right field in place of Carlos Beltran, and went 2-for-3, raising his spring average to .318. His out was a hard-hit line drive to center field … Allen Craig drove in both St. Louis runs … Mitchell Boggs and Fernando Salas both made their final appearances before leaving to join their teams for the World Baseball Classic. Both pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Boggs will be on the U.S. team, and Salas will pitch for Mexico. .. Shortstop Ronny Cedeno made two throwing errors.

Off the field: Beltran was scratched from the starting lineup because of a sore toe on his right foot, where he was hit by a pitch in Thursday’s game. He still said he will be joining the Puerto Rican team for the WBC on Sunday, along with catcher Yadier Molina … Manager Mike Matheny was back in the dugout, one day after missing the Cardinals’ trip to Kissimmee because of illness.

Coming up: The Cardinals and Nationals will play again on Sunday, this time in Viera. Jaime Garcia is scheduled to make his second start of the spring and will be opposed by St. Louis-area native Ross Detwiler, who will be making his final appearance before leaving to join the U.S. team for the WBC.
