Cardinals 8, Astros 8
With a television crew from his hometown of Pensacola, Fla., on hand, Adron Chambers hit a three-run homer and turned in a sliding catch in left-field. Daniel Descalso and Pete Kozma each drove in two runs.
The Cardinals failed to protect an 8-4 lead, giving up two runs in the seventh inning and two runs in the ninth. The runs in the seventh came off minor-leaguer Jorge Rondon and the runs in the ninth were allowed by Victor Marte, who could not pitch around a throwing error by shortstop Ryan Jackson.
On the field:
The battle for the fourth outfielder spot remains intense. In addition to Chambers’ homer, Shane Robinson had a double, scored two runs and turned in two nice defensive plays in right field… Joe Kelly made his first start of the spring and pitched two scoreless innings, and pitching coach Derek Lilliquist was happy with his outing. “The ball was coming out good,” Lilliquist said. “He made some good pitches. His breaking ball was sharp. A lot of positives for him first time out." … Jason Motte allowed two hits, including a home run, and a walk as he gave up two runs in his one inning of work … Edward Sanchez, a darkhorse candidate to earn a spot in the bullpen, pitched another perfect inning with one strikeout. He has retired all nine batters he has faced this spring, in three outings, with five strikeouts.
Off the field:
Manager Mike Matheny did not make the 2 ½ hour trip to Kissimmee because illness. Carlos Beltran also remained in Jupiter to get treatment on his injured toe, suffered when he was hit by a pitch in Thursday’s game. He is scheduled to leave on Saturday to begin training with the Puerto Rico team for the World Baseball Classic, but says he is now unsure whether the injury will change those plans.
The Cardinals and Washington Nationals will meet the next two days, Saturday in Jupiter and Sunday in Viera, for the first time this spring. The starting pitchers for Saturday will be Adam Wainwright and Gio Gonzalez, the same pairing the last time the two teams met, in the now famous game five of the NL Division Series which featured the Cardinals’ dramatic comeback. Shelby Miller is set to pitch in a game for the first time this spring, following Wainwright.
