Weather: Partly cloudy, 83 degrees.

The result: Marlins 8, Cardinals 3

High: Michael Wacha, the Cardinals’ first-round draft pick last June, made his major-league spring training debut with an impressive two innings in which he made 21 pitches, 19 of which were strikes. “He was strike one on every hitter, and that’s what we preach here, get ahead in the count,” said manager Mike Matheny. Wacha did allow one single and an unearned run while striking out three.

Low: Trevor Rosenthal struggled through his two innings of work in the starting role, allowing five hits, two walks and four earned runs. “He was trying to hump up a little bit when we didn’t need to,” Matheny said. “He was anxious. He threw a lot of pitches in the bullpen.” Rosenthal threw 45 pitches, 27 for strikes … First baseman Allen Craig did not play because of an achy right shoulder. Matheny said the team will be cautious with him as a precautionary move, noting this first exhibition game came on Feb. 23, compared to the first game coming on March 5 last year …. Marlins catcher Jeff Mathis suffered a broken collarbone when he was hit by a foul tip. He is expected to miss about six weeks.

On the field: David Freese hit the Cardinals’ first home run of the spring, a solo shot in the second. … Matt Adams, playing first in place of Craig, had a pair of singles, one of which drove in two runs. … Matt Carpenter only had two fielding chances in his five innings at second base, and handled both easily… Randy Choate gave up a home run to a right-handed hitter, Alfredo Silverio, whom he likely would not have faced during the regular season. He also had two strikeouts in his one inning of work … Eduardo Sanchez pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts … Adams and shortstop Pete Kozma played the complete game in the field … Oscar Taveras was robbed of an extra-base, multi-RBI hit on a running catch on the warning track by Christian Yelich in the seventh inning … Former Cardinal prospect Zach Cox was 1-for-3 with an RBI single.

Off the field: Three people were eliminated in the media’s survivor pool of trying to pick which player will appear in the most consecutive games this spring before getting a day off. Ronny Cedeno, Kolten Wong and Greg Garcia did not get into the first game, leaving Carpenter, Kozma, Taveras, Shane Robinson and Justin Christian alive in the competition … Kozma won the team bunting championship in the morning workout as the position players’ representative, defeating the pitchers’ champion, Michael Blazek… This was the first of eight games the Cardinals will play against the Marlins this spring. They were the visiting team and the game drew a crowd of 3,504, about half of the capacity at Roger Dean Stadium.

Coming up: The Cardinals will host the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. Left-hander John Gast will be on the mound for the start that originally had been scheduled to go to Shelby Miller. He will be followed by left-hander Tyler Lyons, with Edward Mujica, Fernando Salas, Sam Freeman, Blazek and Eric Fornataro also available in relief… Adam Wainwright will start Monday vs. Houston in Jupiter, and Jaime Garcia will make his first start Tuesday against the Red Sox in Ft. Myers .. Matheny said shortstop Rafael Furcal might get a right-handed at-bat on Sunday, but won't play in the field for at least a few days because of his sore elbow.
