Game Report: Sharks 2, Blues 0

The Blues were shut out for the third time in their last six games as they began a crucial three-game trip to California on Thursday night with a loss against the Sharks in San Jose.

The Blues have won only one of their last 10 games (1-7-2) and fallen behind in the race for the two wild card playoff spots in the Western Conference. They have 75 points and trail the Los Angeles Kings by four points for the eighth and final spot.

The Colorado Avalanche (78 points) and Calgary Flames (76) also are ahead of the Blues.
Carter Hutton had been scheduled to start in goal for the Blues but the team announced shortly before the pre-game skate that he would not play because of a sore neck, an injury which apparently happened sometime after the morning skate.

Jake Allen started, and equipment manage Ben Wexler signed a contract as the emergency backup goalie in case something happening to Allen. Wexler was a goalie on the University of Illinois team. Ville Husso was recalled from San Antonio and will join the Blues on Friday in Los Angeles.

Allen stopped all 21 San Jose shots in the first two periods and their first 30 in the game before the Sharks broke the scoreless tie with a power-play goal with 7:48 to play in the third period. They scored the insurance goal into an empty net 15 seconds to play.

All three of the Blues recent shut outs have come when Allen was inin goal.

The Blues only had 16 shots on goal, just two in the final period.

Looking ahead
: The Blues will play the Kings on Saturday and finish the trip on Monday night against the Ducks in Anaheim.
