A three-goal first period sparked the Winnipeg Jets to a 4-0 win over the Blues Friday night at Scottrade Center, the Blues’ fifth consecutive loss – their longest losing streak of the season. They also have lost four of their last five home games.

The slide has dropped them into the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, but they lead both the Los Angeles Kings and Calgary Flames by just one point.

Jake Allen was in goal for the Blues and allowed four goals on the first 14 shots by the Jets, but once again was the victim of the Blues’ offense failing to show up. In Allen’s last 14 starts, his teammates have scored 0 or 1 goals in nine of those 14 games.

The losing streak began with a loss to Pittsburgh on Feb. 11 but picked up steam two nights later when the Blues blew a 3-0 lead in the third period in Nashville and lost in overtime. Since the start of that period they have been outscored 13-3.

The Jets scored twice in a span of 45 seconds midway through the first period, then added a late power play goal to build the 3-0 lead.

Needing a big response as the second period began, the Blues instead went more than 10 minutes without a shot on goal and saw the Jets score again 6:04 into the period to increase the lead to 4-0.

Conner Hellebuyck earned his second shutout over the Blues this season, stopping all 34 shots. The Blues out-shot the Jets 34-23 but were 0-of-4 on the power play as they were shut out for the fifth time this season.

Looking ahead:
The Blues play in Nashville again on Sunday which begins a stretch in which they will play six of their next seven games on the road while Scottrade Center is home to a pair of college basketball tournaments. The league trading deadline is on Monday.
