Game Report: Blues 4, Senators 1

A three-goal second period carried the Blues to victory Thursday night in Ottawa.

Vladimir Tarasenko, Alex Pietrangelo and Brayden Schenn got the goals in a 10:40 span as the Blues completed a sweep of their two-game trip to Toronto and Ottawa.

Tarasenko scored his 20th goal of the year, deflecting a shot by Robert Bortuzzo, to start the flurry. Pietrangelo followed with a goal on his 28th birthday and Schenn capped the period with his 18th of the season. The Blues had 19 shots on goal during the period.

Alexander Steen added an empty-net goal in the closing minutes.

Carter Hutton made his second consecutive start and got the win to improve his record to 10-3-1. He is 5-0-1 in his last six starts. Ottawa’s only goal on 21 shots came from Bobby Ryan late in the second period after the Blues had built the 3-0 lead.

The Blues had a chance to increase the lead during a 5-on-3 power play for 1:18 to start the third period but once again failed to score. They are now 0-of-7 during 5-on-3 situations this season.

That was part of an 0-of-3 game on the power play, which left the Blues with just one power play goal in their last 30 chances.

Looking ahead: The Blues return home on Saturday night to begin a four-game homestand with a game against the Arizona Coyotes.
