Game Report: Blues 3, Canucks 1

Goals by Patrik Berglund and Kyle Brodziak led the Blues to a much-needed win Saturday night in Vancouver.

The Blues broke a season-high three-game losing streak heading into the Christmas break.

Berglund scored on a backhanded shot midway through the first period. Alexander Steen had a chance to increase the lead to 2-0 in the second period but was stopped on a breakaway attempt and the Canucks came back down and scored to tie the game.

With just 90 seconds left in the second period, Brodziak’s shot from a severe angle found its way into the net to again put the Blues ahead and goalie Jake Allen was able to protect that lead through the third period.

Steen finally was able to score an empty-net goal with 53 seconds left for the final 3-1 margin.

Allen stopped 30 of 31 shots by the Canucks, including all 13 in the third period.

The win salvaged the final game of a four-game Canadian trip for the Blues and gave them a record of 23-13-2 entering the NHL’s Christmas break. Their total of 48 points leads the Central Division, one ahead of the Nashville Predators, but the Predators have played three fewer games than the Blues.

Looking ahead: The Blues and Predators will meet at Scottrade Center when the season resumes on Dec. 27.
