Game Report: Blues 4, Avalanche 3

Robert Bortuzzo could not have picked a better time for his first goal of the season.

The Blues’ defenseman scored his first goal since Nov. 22 of last year at 9:05 of the third period and the Blues were able to hold on to defeat the Avalanche Thursday night in Denver.

The goal came after Bortuzzo inadvertently helped the Avalanche score earlier in the period when he ran over goalie Carter Hutton as he tried to keep Blake Comeau away from the net. As Bortuzzo laid on top of Hutton, Comeau was able to tap the puck into the net to pull Colorado within one goal at 3-2.

The Blues challenged that Hutton was interfered with by Comeau but after a video review the goal was allowed to stand.

Another video review worked out in the Blues favor with 2:34 to go in the game, when the Avalanche appeared to score the tying goal but the Blues challenged that the play was offside, and the call on the ice was reversed.

The flurry in the third period came after the Blues scored three times in the second period to take a 3-1 lead. Paul Stastny scored his third goal of the year for his 600th career point to tie the game at 1 before Jaden Schwartz continued his hot start to the season with his sixth goal and Vince Dunn scored his second of the year.

Schwartz leads the Blues with 12 points with six goals and six assists through the season’s first eight games.

Hutton got his second start of the season in the Blues’ second game in as many nights and he stopped 38 of 41 shots, although he had no chance on Comeau’s goal and Colorado’s final goal came when they got a good bounce off the end boards as Hutton went to play the puck behind the net, leaving him out of position.

Worth noting: Vladimir Tarasenko’s assist on Stastny’s goal gave him at least one point in seven of the Blues’ eight games this season … Alex Pietrangelo and Vladimir Sobotka each earned two assists … Pietrangelo now has 10 points so far this season … The Blues improved to 6-0 when leading after two periods, even though they have now been outscored 13-8 in the third period.

Looking ahead: The Blues will play their first game against the expansion Las Vegas Golden Knights Saturday night in Las Vegas.
